Royal Brackla PX Finish
Nose: Toffee and Granny Smith apples to start, with leather note on the side. Vanilla cookies develop, balanced by the sharp fruit. The cookies become milkshakes and the apples add a layer of floral blossom. Musky orange zest notes – fresh and dried – build.
Palate: Richly textured, with caramel and toffee notes backed up my maltiness and cream. Stewed sweet and sour apples are joined by black pepper and cinnamon heat, and some baking spice. Damp oak notes build in the glass.
Finish: Apple skin and fruit, boiled sweets and orange peel. Mineral notes linger.
We love Pedro Ximenez (PX) whiskies. These are very much amongst our favourite drams. With their official distillery bottlings, Royal Brackla distillery use Oloroso wood exclusively for their 12-year-old bottle and Palo Cortado wood exclusively with their 18-year-old expression. Both bottles are released with an ABV of 46%. And like our other Royal Brackla release we wanted to produce another full fat, cask strength sherry expression. While Oloroso has a drier flavour, we wanted to compliment our Integrity Malts range by offering a sweeter, PX Royal Brackla expression.
These small, freshly sherry seasoned 125 litre quarter casks sourced from our preferred cooperage impart more sherried goodness due to an increased surface contact area between wood and spirit than regular larger hogsheads used by large distilleries.
We have also sampled this expression too. And within just one month of being re-racked this whisky had already started to darken and pick up classic raisin, dates and candied fruit flavours as you’d expect from PX seasoned wood. We can’t wait to see how this develops over the coming months where it will be sampled regularly. We expect it to be bottled in August / September 2025 though possibly sooner.
